What size bonsai pot do I need?
As a general rule, pot length should be approximately two thirds of your tree’s height for upright styles, or two thirds of the widest spread for broader trees. Depth should roughly match the trunk diameter at the base.
When in doubt go smaller. Bonsai thrive in snug pots that encourage fine root development, but do consider your local climate.
Glazed or unglazed: which is right for my tree?
Unglazed earthy tones suit conifers, junipers, pines and maples. Glazed pots suit flowering, fruiting and deciduous trees where the colour complements seasonal change. There are no strict rules, but understanding the convention helps you make a choice you’ll be happy with long term.
Can I use any ceramic pot for bonsai?
Not ideally. Bonsai pots have drainage holes specifically sized and positioned for bonsai soil and watering practice. A standard decorative ceramic without proper drainage may cause waterlogging and root rot.
Do larger pots help bonsai grow faster?
Counterintuitively no. A correctly sized pot encourages the fine dense root structure that supports good tree health. Long & ‘fast’ growth does not always mean good for Bonsai. Save larger pots for large mature trees that have earned them.
What styles of bonsai pots do you stock?
Bonsai Shop stock glazed, unglazed, plastic training pots, cascade and semi-cascade pots, shohin pots, landscape trays and more: Australia’s largest online range with new styles added regularly.
